Social Justice Committee to receive update on community policing in Wales

The Assembly’s Social Justice Committee will hear about the success of neighbourhood policing in Wales at its next meeting. Deputy Chief Constable Mick Giannasi of Gwent Police will tell the committee that neighbourhood policing is traditional, but with a modern edge, and is aimed at putting the police back into the heart of communities. The initiative has had early success but needs to be developed further against a backdrop of inadequate financial settlements and increasing service pressures. Members will also hear from the National Offender Management Service about the work it is doing to try to reduce re-offending in Wales. At the same meeting, Keep Wales Tidy will give a presentation to the Committee about the work it is doing in empowering local communities to take responsibility for the cleanliness of their areas. The meeting takes place at 9.30am, Wednesday March 7 in Committee Room 3, Senedd, Cardiff Bay. Full details and an agenda Janice Gregory AM, Chair of the Committee, said: “I am very pleased that Deputy Chief Constable Giannasi will be at the meeting to talk about neighbourhood policing. This is an important step towards helping to reduce crime and anti-social behaviour in local communities.
