Royal Welsh visitors urged to take part in work of National Assembly

24 July 2012

Visitors to the Royal Welsh show ground at Llanelwedd, Builth Wells, will have an opportunity to learn more about the work of the National Assembly for Wales and meet Assembly Members during the week (July 23- 26).

On Tuesday 24 July, visitors to the National Assembly’s outreach bus on the showground will have two opportunities to meet with the Chair of the Petitions Committee, William Powell AM, to learn more about the petitions process and how they can submit a petition for consideration by the Committee.

“The petitions process enables the public to bring a range of issues to our attention as Committee members and get directly involved in the work of the National Assembly,” said the Chair of the Petitions Committee, William Powell AM.

“Petitions are an effective way of asking the National Assembly to consider an issue that affects Wales and which it has the power to do something about.”

“I look forward to meeting with visitors at the Royal Welsh Showground and explaining the Committee’s work in more detail.”

The Chair of the Health and Social Care Committee, Mark Drakeford AM, will also be on the outreach bus on Tuesday 24 July. He will be holding a drop-in session to discuss the Food Hygiene Rating (Wales) Bill.

The Food Hygiene Rating (Wales) Bill includes provision for food authorities to operate a food hygiene rating scheme and places a duty on food businesses to display their food hygiene rating at their establishment. The general principles of the Bill are currently being considered by the Committee.

“Food hygiene is an important issue for the public in Wales and has been an emotive subject since the E.coli outbreak in 2005,” said Chair of the Health and Social Care Committee, Mark Drakeford AM.

“This is the first piece of legislation to be considered by members of the Health and Social Care Committee.”

“I am keen to discuss the Bill with visitors at the Royal Welsh Show and hear their views and ideas on the subject.”
