National Assembly hosts launch of annual Poppy Appeal in Wales

22 October 2009

This year’s Poppy Appeal is officially underway in Wales.

Veterans from the armed forces joined the Presiding Officer for the Welsh Assembly and many other AMs in the Ty Hywel building for an event publicising the campaign.

Organised by the Royal British Legion, this year’s Poppy Appeal is trying to match last year’s 31 million pounds raised to help veterans of the armed forces.

This year’s campaign will focus on support for those wounded and bereaved from Afghanistan.

National Assembly Presiding Officer, Rt Hon Lord Elis-Thomas AM commenting on the launch said: “It’s as important now as it ever was to remember what our armed services have done and are still doing for this country. The work the Royal British Legion does helps so many people from those injured in action to the relatives of those who tragically died in conflict. I hope Wales can help the Poppy Appeal reach and beat last year’s record total raised and provide even more support to those who need it.”
