The National Assembly for Wales's Presiding Officer, Dame Rosemary Butler AM, will welcome top Welsh born economist and author, Sylvia Ann Hewlett, to the Pierhead on 19 March.

Ms Hewlett will deliver a keynote address, entitled "The value of having women in top jobs", before taking part in a Q&A session with the audience.

The session has been organised as part of the Presiding Officer's Women in Public Life (#POWiPL) campaign, aimed at encouraging more women in Wales to get involved in public life by becoming magistrates, councillors, lawyers, school governors or seeking public appointments on boards.

Central to the campaign is the Presiding Officer's drive to provide strong role models for women, through other woman who have succeeded in traditionally male dominated spheres, delivering a series of keynote lectures at the Pierhead.

"Women in top jobs are incredibly valuable", Ms Hewlett said.

"My new research shows that organisations that have 'Gender Smarts' around decision making tables are much more likely to unlock innovation and drive growth."

The theme of the event will centre on how a diverse boardroom can benefit a business or organisation, and how employers can overcome the barriers women face in the workplace.

"It is fantastic to be able to welcome Sylvia Ann Hewlett to speak to us about the challenges women face in the boardroom," said Presiding Officer, Dame Rosemary Butler AM.

"She demonstrates that women can become leaders in fields that have traditionally been dominated by men.

"That's why the National Assembly has organised this series of events where leading female figures can share their experiences, and perhaps offer solutions to lowering the barriers women face in public life.

"But our work doesn't stop here.  As part of my Women in in Public Life campaign I have  launched the Women in Public Life Portal, a one-stop online advice facility for women interested in entering public office, and a development scheme to provide mentoring, training and role shadowing opportunities to women."

The portal can be accessed via the following link: Women in Public Life portal or through the Twitter channel @WomenofWales.
