Take the first step towards your future with an apprenticeship at the heart of Welsh politics

16/08/2019

Search for next intake of National Assembly apprentices is underway.

Apprenticeships at Assembly Wales

Whether you’re leaving full-time education, seeking a change in career or want a fresh start, an apprenticeship at the National Assembly for Wales is the first step towards your future.

The 2020 Apprenticeship Scheme is now open for applicants who want the opportunity to work and study at the heart of Welsh politics. Successful candidates will develop skills and knowledge on how to navigate and assist a busy and exciting workplace where Welsh laws are made. They will also study a Diploma in Business Administration whilst earning a living wage of £17,383.

The new apprentices will start their 12-month positions in January 2020 and will be given the opportunity to work at the National Assembly for Wales offices in Cardiff Bay. The range of experience available to the apprentices varies across the service areas: from assisting the human resources team, to contributing to communication and engagement campaigns, administrating the security and building facilities departments and working with the Assembly committee clerking teams on the front line of the democratic process.

Lowri Williams, Head of Human Resources at the National Assembly for Wales, is encouraging people from a range of backgrounds and experiences to apply;

“We are looking for value driven people from a variety of different backgrounds to bring their unique perspectives, experiences, and skill sets to our vibrant, inclusive Assembly. We pride ourselves on working as one team. If you are eager to learn, and equally eager to share your ideas with us; collaborative and passionate about making a difference at the heart of democracy in Wales, this is the apprenticeship for you. Join us!”

Benefits of the scheme include flexible working hours and family friendly policies to support a healthy work/life balance in an inclusive and supportive working environment.

Many previous apprentices have gone on to full time employment, some in positions within the Assembly Commission. This is what some of the current apprentices have to say about their experience:

Mahima Khan from Cardiff has gained valuable skills and insight on the working environment; “I feel like taking on an apprenticeship was a fantastic idea as it allows me to enhance work based learning skills and gives me an insight on the working environment. It teaches me how to balance studying with day to day work and gives me opportunities to progress.”

Joshua Phillips from Neath praises the support of his colleagues at the organisation; “Since joining the National Assembly for Wales as an apprentice I have received support and guidance from both my colleagues and the organisation, which has helped me complete my apprenticeship and develop the skills I require to succeed and progress in my career.”

Aled apprenticeships

Aled Thomas from Cardiff is encouraging others to apply; “I recommend that you strongly consider applying for this apprenticeship scheme because it would be an invaluable start for your career, especially as this place is so welcoming for minorities such as LGBT people and people with a disability. There are a variety of places to work here.  Go for it.”

Applicants must be at least 16 years old and not be in full-time education or employment by the time the apprenticeship starts in January 2020. They must have English and Maths GCSE (A*- C) or equivalent, and do not have a qualification in a similar subject as Business Administration.

An information pack which includes guidance on how to making an application can be found at www.assembly.wales/Apprenticeships

Applications should be submitted to jobs@assembly.wales by the closing date on 27 September 2019. Full terms and conditions are available on the website.
