Rarely seen Kyffin Williams paintings at Senedd centenary exhibition

01/10/2018

Rarely seen works by the celebrated Welsh artist Sir Kyffin Williams RA will go on display at the Senedd throughout October.

The exhibition, in partnership with the Sir Kyffin Williams Trust, is the culmination of the centenary celebrations marking 100 years since the birth of the painter widely regarded as a defining artist of the 20th century.

Visitors to the Senedd will be able to view paintings and prints from private collections as well as archive footage of Sir Kyffin who lived in Pwllfanogl, Llanfairpwll, on Anglesey.

David Meredith, Chairman of the Sir Kyffin Williams Trust said:

"Sir Kyffin Williams was truly an artistic giant who put the people, the landscape and the seascape as well as the animals and flora of Wales on a pedestal.

"With gifts of his massive collection of art to Oriel Môn in Llangefni and to the National Library of Wales in Aberystwyth, Sir Kyffin is one of Wales' greatest benefactors.

"I can think of no greater honour than to be able to conclude the Sir Kyffin Centenary Celebrations in Wales (1918-2018) at the Senedd in Cardiff Bay.

"On behalf of the Trust I wish to thank the Assembly for this official recognition which I know would have given Kyffin great pleasure."

Elin Jones AM, Llywydd of the National Assembly for Wales said:

"I would like to thank the Sir Kyffin Williams Trust for choosing the Senedd as a fitting place for the climax of their centenary celebrations and I am very much looking forward to seeing these defining works on display.

"I would like to welcome more great art and artists to the Senedd from across Wales to help visitors further understand our history and proud heritage."

Invited guests will attend the official opening of the exhibition on Wednesday, 3 October before it formally opens to the public on Thursday, 4 October.

On Saturday 27 October, a special tour of the exhibition will be delivered by the National Library of Wales which will be an opportunity to learn more about the life and work of Sir Kyffin Williams. Booking is essential – please contact 0300 2006565 or email contact@assembly.wales
