Proposed Special Educational Needs Information Measure

Pre-ballot Information

Alun Cairns

Policy Objectives of the Proposed Measure

The measure seeks to bring forward provision similar to the provisions of the Special Educational Needs (Information) Bill, to cover children in Wales.  The SEN (Information) Bill, which received Royal Assent on 21/07/2008, extends to England and Wales but applies to children in England only.

The Bill makes two substantive provisions by amending the Education Act 1996.

Firstly, it requires the Secretary of State to exercise certain of his powers under that Act with a view to securing the provision of information about children in England with special educational needs that would be likely to assist in improving the well-being of children in England with special educational needs.

Secondly, the Bill requires the Secretary of State to publish, or arrange to be published, information about children in England with special educational needs, the publication of which would be likely to assist in improving the well-being of these children.

This Measure would enable children in Wales to receive similar benefits accorded to those in England by the Special Educational Needs (Information) Bill.
