Bill-055 - Bethan Jenkins - Financial Literacy Bill

Pre-ballot Information

A Member must provide ‘pre-ballot information’ to set out the intended purpose of their proposed Bill before it is entered into the Presiding Officer's ballot. This information is set out below.

Policy Objectives of the Bill

The purpose of this legislation would be to promote financial literacy in the Welsh population through a range of actions that could include for example:

(a) Placing financial education within the school curriculum;
(b) Placing duties on some statutory bodies to promote financial literacy and putting some protections for people against unscrupulous financial practices; and
(c) Ensuring local authorities make debt advice available for people.

Support Received

Including financial literacy on the school curriculum, amongst a whole series of actions aimed at promoting financial literacy has been a major campaigning goal of several organisations, including websites such as MoneySavingExpert.com

Consultation

If selected to bring forward legislation on this, I would consult widely.
